Built for platforms that need personalisation at scale, without production risk
Give users a starting point, not a blank canvas
Smart templates with defined editing zones let customers personalise postcards, greeting cards, packaging, and marketing materials confidently, without design knowledge or print production experience.
Enforce print correctness without manual oversight
Bleed margins, spot colours, DPI thresholds, and validation rules are baked into the template and enforced at export, no preflight review required.
Scale from one template to thousands of outputs
Variable data injection lets you merge dynamic text, images, and data fields into a single template at scale, direct mail, campaign variations, and mass-personalised print products handled in one flow.
Key capabilities
For your users
Replace the blank canvas with a guided starting point.
Smart templates give users creative freedom within the right boundaries, faster to a result, fewer errors, no design knowledge required.
Preview the finished product before committing.
Live previews, including 3D product mockups, show customers exactly what will be printed before they place an order, managing expectations before they become support tickets.
For your platform
Placeholders and lockable designs.
Lock brand assets, typography, and structural elements via the role and scope system. Only the personalisation zones the template author intended can be changed.
Custom UI and content moderation.
Restyle the editor, configure the toolbar, add language support, and implement content moderation hooks to safeguard designs against harmful content or trademark issues.
Text variables and data-driven generation.
Tag any text element as a variable, connect a data source, and generate mass-personalised outputs programmatically, without a manual editor session per variation.
PDF/X export and print validation.
Production-safe files in PDF/X format with CMYK conversion, spot colour preservation, and configurable bleed. Validation rules enforce output quality before any file leaves the platform.
How to bring print personalization into your app
Four steps from a storefront product page to production-safe output.
Enable personalization in your storefront
Launch a production-ready personalization editor in a day with a starter kit, or build a fully custom experience on the same creative engine. The editing experience stays consistent across web, mobile, and server.
Open Theming Demo

Lock guardrails inside templates
Smart templates with locked brand elements and defined personalization zones keep designs on-spec by construction. Customers personalize within boundaries the template author intended, so every output stays print-safe without manual review.
Open Placeholder Demo

Drive variations with variable data
Tag text and image fields as variables, connect a data source, and generate personalized variations automatically. Direct mail, campaign materials, and mass-personalized print products all flow through the same pipeline without a manual editor session per record.
Open Variable Data Demo

Validate and produce print-safe output
Built-in validation catches issues before designs reach production. Generate print-ready files from the same creation session, with bleed, DPI, and colour profile checks applied automatically per output.

One creative engine across web, mobile, and server
Print personalisation rarely happens in a single place. Customers customise on web, review on mobile, and platforms generate bulk outputs server-side. IMG.LY runs one shared creative engine across all of these contexts. The same templates, validation rules, and rendering logic apply everywhere.
Identical rendering everywhere
Text, images, and layout constraints render the same across web, iOS, Android, and server. No per-platform differences in how designs look or how print rules are enforced.
Validation logic lives in the template
Bleed, colour profiles, and export constraints are defined once at the template level and applied automatically, on every platform, in every output.
Server-side generation at scale
Connect templates to a data source and generate thousands of print-ready personalised outputs server-side via the Node.js renderer, no manual editor session required per variation.
How PostBuddy Launched Personalized Direct Mail for E-Commerce Without Building a Custom Editor
4×
difference in A/B-tested campaign performance

Nordic markets reached (DK, SE, NO)

custom editor maintenance — embedded SDK instead
PostBuddy is a Denmark-based startup modernizing direct mail marketing — enabling e-commerce brands to create, personalize, and automate postcard campaigns integrated with their online workflows.
It’s hard to imagine we could have launched PostBuddy without a design editor SDK. Customers want an integrated experience, and we needed to channel our limited resources into our core mission, not a custom editor.
PostBuddy
Challenge
PostBuddy needed an embedded design editor that lets non-technical e-commerce users create print-ready postcards with personalization and variable data — without burning early-stage engineering on a custom editor.
Solution
Integrated CE.SDK to deliver an in-app design experience with mail merge, custom branding, and template guidance for streamlined postcard creation.
- 4× performance gap between A/B-tested designs proved design variation matters.
- Expanded reach into Sweden and Norway on top of the Danish home market.
- Engineering stayed focused on PostBuddy’s core direct-mail automation.
Why print personalisation teams trust IMG.LY
Templates that guarantee correct output
Bleed, layout, colour, everything that matters to production is defined at the template level and enforced at export. Correctness is structural, not dependent on what the customer does.
Scales from single orders to bulk generation
The same infrastructure handles a single customer personalising a greeting card and a marketing team generating 50,000 direct mail variations. Server-side rendering via Node.js handles volume without performance trade-offs.
One template, every print format
Postcards, packaging, brochures, direct mail - once a template defines brand and validation rules, every print format inherits them. No format-specific rebuilds.
One integration, every platform and use case
Web, iOS, Android, macOS, and server. One SDK, consistent rendering, one set of templates and validation rules across every surface your personalisation product runs on.
More from IMG.LY
Print personalisation products are not only judged by how many products they offer
They are also judged by how confidently customers can personalise them. IMG.LY helps you embed that creative layer directly into your platform, with smart templates, automated validation, variable data generation, and one engine that keeps every output production-safe.
Print Personalisation FAQs
The editor supports personalisation of paper prints (postcards, greeting cards, wedding invitations, packaging), apparel (t-shirts, tote bags, caps, shoes), and marketing materials (brochures, flyers, catalogs) - among others. The UI is fully customisable, so the feature set exposed to users can be scoped to any product type.
Design validation rules - bleed margins, spot colours, page clippings, and resolution thresholds - are configured at the template level and run automatically as users edit. Errors are flagged inside the editor before export, so no out-of-spec file can be submitted without the user being made aware.
Tag any text element in a template as a variable, connect the template to a data source, and the SDK generates unique personalised outputs for each record automatically. This works for direct mail, campaign materials, and any use case requiring high-volume print variations from a single design.
Designs can be exported as PNG, JPEG, and PDF. The Print-Ready PDF plugin enables PDF/X export with CMYK values preserved on vector and text elements, and named spot colours that pass through for print-provider pick-up.
Yes - the toolbar is fully configurable on both web and mobile. You can expose only the tools relevant to your use case, lock structural elements via the role and scope system, and implement permissions hooks using your own backend logic.
Yes. On PDF export, CMYK values are preserved exactly on vector and text elements — fills, strokes, and named spot colours pass straight through without an RGB round-trip or profile-based colour shift. Two things to keep in mind: raster images still export as RGB, and the canvas previews on screen in RGB, so imports may look slightly different on screen than they will on press.
Yes. IMG.LY's solutions team provides different levels of support based on your licence type, from full documentation access through to dedicated integration assistance. Contact the team to discuss your use case.
