Design Editor
Definition
CE.SDK’s full-featured multi-page design composition surface, suited for building templates, marketing materials, and brand tools. It is the most general-purpose of the Starter Kit configurations, exposing the complete range of CE.SDK editing capabilities: multi-page layouts, image and shape blocks, rich text formatting, template placeholders, text variables, role-based editing, asset library access, and export to PNG, JPEG, PDF, PDF/X, and other supported formats.
Standard vs. Advanced Variant
Both variants run on the same CreativeEngine and share the same scene files and templates. The difference is which editing capabilities the UI surfaces.
Design Editor (Standard)
The Adopter-role surface: a simplified interface suited to users who are customizing existing templates rather than creating designs from scratch. Exposes only the controls that have been scoped open by the template author.
Design Editor (Advanced)
The Creator-role surface: exposes the full property set, layer management, and design constraint controls needed to author templates that others will later adapt. Intended for designers and template authors with access to the complete editing toolkit.
What the Design Editor Enables
Multi-Page Documents
Page add, reorder, duplicate, and delete. Page overview mode for quickly navigating and evaluating multi-page designs without entering the full editing surface.
Block Manipulation
Full control over images, shapes, text, stickers, and grouped elements.
Alignment & Snapping
Alignment, distribution, and snapping tools for precisely positioning and spacing multiple elements, with configurable snapping guides that activate when dragging blocks near alignment targets.
Template Authoring
Placeholders, locked elements, and role/scope configuration for creating guided design experiences.
Text Variables
Dynamic content that can be populated programmatically or swapped at export time, supporting personalization and data merge workflows.
Asset Library
Images, stickers, shapes, filters, fonts, templates, and custom sources via the configurable asset library.
Layer Panel
Manages stacking order and visibility in complex compositions with many overlapping elements.
Plugin Support
Background Removal and Vectorizer surface as Canvas Menu actions on image blocks. The Design Editor is the primary context for most official plugins.
Print-Ready Export
Export to PDF/X with CMYK and spot color support, alongside PNG, JPEG, WebP, and standard PDF.
Typical Use Cases
Brand Portals & DAM Platforms
A central design team authors locked templates and regional or local teams adapt them within defined constraints. The Creator/Adopter model maps directly to this structure: creators lock brand-critical elements (logo placement, color palette, typefaces) while adopters swap imagery, edit copy, and export without the ability to break the template. Optimizely used this pattern to serve 1,000+ customers with a brand template editor, with deal close rates and customer retention both improving after the feature launched.
Marketing & Creative Agencies
Agencies producing campaign assets across multiple formats and clients. The Design Editor’s multi-page support means a single scene file can hold every size variant of social posts, banners, email headers, and print ads, with shared brand elements. Template workflows let junior team members or clients make approved variations without a senior designer touching every asset.
Web-to-Print & Print-on-Demand Platforms
Users design business cards, posters, flyers, brochures, or stationery and the output must be print-ready. PDF/X export with CMYK and spot color support means the Design Editor produces files that go directly to production without a separate prepress step.
Internal Creative Platforms
Enterprises (particularly retail chains, franchise networks, and automotive groups) where dozens or hundreds of locations need to produce locally adapted versions of centrally approved creative. Digitas Germany used CE.SDK to build a central creative portal powering 140+ dealer campaigns across multiple automotive brands, giving dealers the ability to create localized content within a brand template framework.
SaaS Products with Design-as-a-Feature
Presentation tools, social media schedulers, email builders, and document editors where the host product needs a design surface as one component of a larger workflow rather than as the core product. The Design Editor integrates as an embedded panel or modal, inheriting the host product’s navigation and auth, while CE.SDK handles all rendering and editing logic.
E-Learning & Certification Platforms
Platforms that generate certificates, diplomas, and course completion assets (one template, personalized at scale using text variables and Data Merge) without manual design work per recipient.
Web (Vanilla JS/TS, React, Vue, Angular, Svelte, SvelteKit, Next.js, Nuxt.js), iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter, Electron, macOS.
