# Offset vs. Digital Printing

Also known as: Offset lithography

## What Is the Difference Between Offset and Digital Printing?

Offset printing inks a metal plate for each color, transfers the image to a rubber blanket, and presses it onto the paper, so every copy is the same and each one gets cheaper as the run grows. Digital printing sends the file straight to the press, with toner or inkjet and no plates, so setup is fast and every copy can be different.

Offset suits long runs and exact brand colors, while digital suits short runs, quick turnarounds, and personalized pieces. A CE.SDK design can go to either press, as a [PDF/X](https://img.ly/glossary/pdf-x.md) for offset or as one file per customer for digital.

## Offset vs. Digital Printing: How Do They Compare?

The plates decide most of it: they cost time and money up front, then make each copy cheap.

- **How it prints**: Offset: Plate to rubber blanket to paper, Digital: Straight from the file

- **Setup**: Offset: Plates and press setup per job, Digital: Almost none

- **Cost per copy**: Offset: Falls as the run grows, Digital: About the same at any quantity

- **Turnaround**: Offset: Longer, plates add lead time, Digital: Often the same or next day

- **Brand colors**: Offset: Spot inks when needed, Digital: Usually matched in CMYK

- **Personalization**: Offset: Every copy identical, Digital: Every copy can differ

## When Should You Use Offset or Digital Printing?

Use offset when thousands of copies share one design, and digital when the run is short, urgent, or personal.

### Use offset for

- **Long runs of one design**

- **Brand colors in exact spot inks**

- **Catalogs, magazines, and books**

### Use digital for

- **Short runs and quick reprints**

- **Personalized direct mail**

- **Prints you need tomorrow**

## How Do You Prepare CE.SDK Designs for Each Press?

### Offset gets a PDF/X with a press profile

On the web and server, the Print Ready PDF plugin exports PDF/X with FOGRA39 for European offset or GRACoL for US commercial printing, and [spot colors](https://img.ly/glossary/spot-color.md) stay as plates of their own.

### Digital gets one file per customer

[Text variables](https://img.ly/glossary/text-variable.md) fill a template from your data, and headless export turns out one PDF per record for [variable data printing](https://img.ly/glossary/variable-data-printing.md). The [Data Merge](https://img.ly/glossary/data-merge.md) starter kit runs it from a spreadsheet.

### Spot colors get CMYK values for digital

Digital presses usually print brand colors from CMYK rather than a mixed ink, so give each spot color CMYK values too and the design is ready for either press.

## Offset and Digital in Direct Mail and Catalogs

### Personalized mailers on a digital press

A direct mail platform merges each recipient's name and offer into one CE.SDK template and sends the batch of PDFs to a digital press.

### A seasonal catalog on offset

A retailer exports its catalog as PDF/X with the printer's offset profile, so the full run prints from plates, where every extra copy costs less.

## FAQs

### Offset vs. digital printing

**Q: When does offset become cheaper than digital?**

A: Once the run is long enough to spread the fixed cost of plates and press setup. Where that happens depends on the size, colors, and paper, so ask for quotes for both methods at your quantity.

**Q: Does offset printing use CMYK?**

A: Most offset jobs print the four process inks from four plates, one per ink. A printer can add a plate for each spot ink, such as a brand color mixed to an exact recipe.

**Q: Is digital printing lower quality than offset?**

A: Not on most jobs. Modern digital presses come close to offset, with exact spot colors the main gap.

**Q: Can you combine offset and digital in one job?**

A: Yes. Direct mail is often printed on offset as shells carrying the shared design, then run through a digital press to add each name and offer.

**Q: Which is more sustainable, offset or digital?**

A: It depends on the run. Digital needs no plates or dampening solution and wastes less on setup, which suits short runs, while offset uses materials efficiently once the run is large. Both can print on FSC-certified paper with soy-based inks.

**Q: What is the difference between sheet-fed and web offset?**

A: A sheet-fed press prints on individual sheets and suits brochures, cards, and shorter runs on a range of papers. A web press prints on a continuous roll of paper, for very high volumes such as newspapers and magazines.
