# EPS File

Also known as: Encapsulated PostScript

## What Is an EPS File?

An EPS file (Encapsulated PostScript) is a [vector](https://img.ly/glossary/vector-vs-raster.md) graphics format for placing artwork, such as a logo, inside other designs and documents. It holds a single page of PostScript code that draws shapes, text, and any embedded photos, plus a bounding box that tells other programs how much space the artwork takes and, usually, a small preview image for the screen.

Brands, designers, and print suppliers use EPS to pass logos and vector artwork back and forth, and CE.SDK brings those files into designs on the web and server.

## EPS vs. PDF: How Do They Compare?

EPS is made for single pieces of artwork that go into a design, and PDF for complete files that go to the printer.

- **Made for**: EPS: Logos and artwork placed in designs, PDF: Finished files sent to print

- **Pages**: EPS: One, PDF: Any number

- **Transparency**: EPS: Flattened when saved, PDF: Kept live in PDF/X-4

- **Color profiles**: EPS: Not included, PDF: Included

- **Opens in**: EPS: Design and print software, PDF: Almost any computer

## When Should You Use EPS or PDF?

Use EPS to share logos and artwork, and PDF to send finished designs to print.

### Use EPS for

- **Logos for signs, embroidery, and merch**

- **Brand libraries of logos and artwork**

- **Spec sheets that ask for EPS**

### Use PDF for

- **Finished designs sent to print**

- **Designs with transparency or several pages**

- **Files clients need to open and check**

## How Do You Prepare an EPS File for Print?

Before you save an EPS for print, take care of fonts, transparency, and color. [Outline fonts](https://img.ly/glossary/outline-fonts.md) covers the first in detail.

- **Outline the text** — Turn text into shapes so it prints the same on a machine without your fonts.

- **Flatten transparency at 300 PPI or more** — EPS stores transparency flattened, and a lower setting leaves shadows and fades banded in print.

- **Set colors to CMYK** — EPS stores colors without a profile, so convert them yourself rather than leaving it to the printer.

- **Keep a PDF copy too** — A PDF opens on almost any computer, so anyone can check what the EPS should look like.

## How Does CE.SDK Handle EPS Files?

On the web and server, the EPS importer turns EPS artwork into editable shapes in a design.

### Step 01: Add the EPS importer

The importer is a separate package with a shared conversion runtime, which loads on the first import, so it doesn't slow the editor's start. Files need an EPS header and a bounding box, and must hold one page.

### Step 02: Place the artwork or fill a placeholder

Add the artwork to a page, or swap it into a named placeholder in a template. Either way it arrives as one group of editable shapes, and any embedded photos stay images. A swap keeps the placeholder's [scopes](https://img.ly/glossary/scope.md), so the template's editing permissions still apply.

### Step 03: Check colors and fonts

Process colors and named [spot colors](https://img.ly/glossary/spot-color.md) can keep their values, while gradients may come in as RGB images. Missing fonts can be swapped for others, so embed or outline text when the typeface matters.

### Step 04: Export a PDF for the printer

Send the finished design as a PDF. When the printer wants [PDF/X](https://img.ly/glossary/pdf-x.md), the Print Ready PDF plugin makes one.

## EPS Logos in Merch Shops and Print Automation

### Logo uploads in a merch shop

A merch shop lets businesses upload their EPS logo, places it on a shirt or mug as shapes they can move and scale, and sends the order to the printer as a PDF.

### Automated logo swaps for print

A print platform fills the logo placeholder on each business card template from customers' EPS files on the server, then exports every card as a PDF without opening an editor.

## FAQs

### EPS file

**Q: Is an EPS file vector or raster?**

A: Mostly vector. An EPS is a PostScript program that draws its shapes and text, so they print sharp at any size. It can also carry embedded photos, which stay pixels, and its screen preview is a small bitmap.

**Q: How do you open an EPS file?**

A: Open it in vector design software, which reads the artwork itself rather than only its preview, or ask the sender for a PDF to look at. In CE.SDK on the web, the EPS Artwork Gallery starter kit adds an EPS panel to the editor, where users upload a file and click it to place the artwork as one editable group.

**Q: What is the difference between EPS and SVG?**

A: Both are vector formats, made for different places. EPS is built for print and can carry CMYK colors. SVG is built for screens, where browsers display it directly. SVG vs. PNG covers SVG in more detail.

**Q: Why does an EPS file look blurry or show as a gray box?**

A: What you see on screen is usually the preview image stored inside the file, not the artwork itself. A low-resolution preview looks blurry, and an app that cannot read the preview shows a plain gray box in its place, yet the file can still print correctly.

**Q: Can you convert an EPS file to PDF?**

A: Yes. Saving an EPS as a PDF in vector design software keeps its shapes and text as vectors, though anything flattened in the EPS stays flattened. In CE.SDK on the web and server, import the EPS and export the design as a PDF.

**Q: Is it safe to accept EPS uploads?**

A: Yes, with limits in place. An EPS is a small program, so treat files from unknown users with care. CE.SDK's EPS importer caps file size, conversion time, and the number of imported shapes by default, and you can add your own limits on top, since the defaults don't cover every cost.
